Why Is My Car Making a Clicking Noise When Driving?

2024 Kia Sportage

Whether it’s a new car or a used one, it’s never a good sign when your vehicle is making a clicking sound. If you start to hear any unusual sounds as you make your way around Pinecrest and Miami, we strongly recommend you bring your vehicle in to be inspected by our expert service center team.

A clicking noise coming from your vehicle could be caused by a variety of issues, such as low engine oil or brake pad issues, so it’s important to have it addressed as soon as possible. Schedule a service appointment today so you and your passengers can stay safe on the Kendall roads.

Reasons Why My Car is Making Clicking Noises When Driving

Low or Dirty Engine Oil

If your car is making clicking sounds when driving, a likely culprit is low or dirty engine oil. Motor oil lubricates all of the components so that you can drive with ease. If you are running low on engine oil, the metal parts tap and grind over time. If you smell burning oil or feel your car’s performance is decreasing, be sure to get an oil change. Be sure to get your oil changed every 3,000 miles if you are using regular oil and every 7,500 miles if you are using synthetic oil.

Faulty Battery or Alternator

If you are hearing a clicking sound, there is probably an issue with the starter system. There can be a faulty battery or alternator, so jumpstart the battery using friends or neighbors. If your battery dies shortly after, then, you might have a problem with your alternator.

Brake Pads

If the clicking happens when you are braking, that means you might have a loose brake pad. A worn brake pad makes a squealing or grinding noise. In order to check your brake pads, you should identify the wheel the clicking sound comes from, raise the car above 6 feet off the ground, unscrew the lug nuts, remove the wheels, and examine the brake pads. If you see that there is a problem, be sure to visit our service center.
