Many Miami and Kendall drivers ask us about the difference between synthetic and regular oil formulations. Is one better than the other? Why are there so many choices anyway? The team at South Dade Kia of Miami is here to shed some light on the issue. Learn why synthetic oil vs. regular oil are different, and find out what you need for your next oil change!

What is Conventional (Regular) Oil?

Conventional oil, or “regular” oil is the basic motor oil that has been used in internal combustion engines for decades. It is a simple petroleum-based substance that lubricates the moving part of the engine, reducing friction and dispersing heat. For a long time, this was the only option on the market. But then, synthetic oil was introduced to the automotive industry.

What is Synthetic Oil?

Synthetic oil is also petroleum-based like regular oil, but it differs quite a bit from conventional oil. Between the two, synthetic is a much more modern formulation that offers a wealth of benefits. It oxidizes less easily, it remains more chemically stable, and it lasts much longer than conventional oil. And, that’s just the beginning:

  • Synthetic oils flow more easily at lower temperatures
  • They offer enhanced engine cleaning properties
  • They deliver better performance in turbocharged engines.

How Do Full Synthetic vs. Synthetic Blends Differ?

We’ve covered the differences between synthetic oil vs. regular oil, but what about full synthetic oil vs. synthetic blends? Synthetic blends combine conventional and synthetic oils into one formulation. This gives drivers some of the benefits of full synthetic, while bringing down the price. But if your car requires synthetic oil, it’s best to choose full synthetic for the best performance possible. Check your owner’s manual or just ask our technicians if you’re not sure what you need.
